چکیده

Dendroarchaeology is under-represented in the Gulf Coastal Plain region of United States (US), and at present, only three published studies have precision dated a collection 18th–19th-century structures. In this study, we examined tree-ring data from pine, poplar, oak timbers used Walker House Tupelo, Mississippi. The was constructed ca. mid-1800s with that appeared to be recycled previous total, 30 samples (16 pines, 8 oaks, 6 poplars) attic crawlspace. We cross-dated latewood ring growth pine period 1541–1734 (r = 0.52, t 8.43, p < 0.0001) using 514-year longleaf (Pinus palustris Mill.) reference chronology southern crawlspace produced 57-year against white (Quercus alba L.) northeast Alabama 1765–1822 0.36, 2.83, 0.01). were unable cross-date six poplar due lack chronologies region. Our findings two important implications: (1) material 1734 represents oldest dendroarchaeology-confirmed dating match for construction materials southeastern US, (2) cross-dating US species statistically significant results, whereas total width failed produce results.

Climatic signals in earlywood, latewood and total ring width of Corsican pine from western France

The influence of climatic factors on the growth of Corsican pine, growing at low elevation on acidic well-drained soils in western France, was evaluated by comparing annual earlywood, latewood and total ring indices with monthly temperature and precipitation data collected at Angers over the period 1922-1991. Latewood formation appeared to be more sensitive to climate than earlywood formation. ...

Water quality of seasonally flooded agricultural fields in Mississippi, USA

Planned flooding of agricultural fields is performed to prevent erosion (e.g. sheet, gully, and rill) and provide habitat for waterfowl. As a post-harvest field treatment, flooding is becoming more common in the agriculturally dominated landscape of the Mississippi Alluvial Valley (MAV) in the southeastern United States. Despite this trend, information pertaining to water quality characteristic...

Nutrient mitigation capacity in Mississippi Delta, USA drainage ditches.

Eutrophication and hypoxia within aquatic systems are a serious international concern. Various management practices have been proposed to help alleviate nutrient loads transported to the Gulf of Mexico and other high-profile aquatic systems. The current study examined the nutrient mitigation capacity of a vegetated (V) and non-vegetated (NV) agricultural drainage ditch of similar size and landf...

Eleventh-century shift in timber procurement areas for the great houses of Chaco Canyon.

An enduring mystery from the great houses of Chaco Canyon is the origin of more than 240,000 construction timbers. We evaluate probable timber procurement areas for seven great houses by applying tree-ring width-based sourcing to a set of 170 timbers. To our knowledge, this is the first use of tree rings to assess timber origins in the southwestern United States. We found that the Chuska and Zu...
